Today we will be showing you how to install a peephole or door viewer in an exterior door. It’s a cheap and easy to do it yourself thing to add some security to your house. You will be able to see who is at your door without opening it and without looking out a window and letting the person know someone is home. You will need to pick a door viewer that will fit your application as they have different viewing angels and finishes to choose from such as satin nickel, bronze, gold/brass, black, ect.
Tools needed are a tape measure, pencil, drill, drill bits, and caulk. Let’s start off by locating where we would like the peephole. We are installing this peephole at a height of 58” from the bottom of the door and then centering it left and right in the door. You will want to use a height that is comfortable for the person or people that are going to use it.
Next we will separate the peephole by turning the two half’s. Once we have it apart we will use the inner part to get a size to pick out the correct size drill bit. For this peephole where are going to use a ½” drill bit. So we will put the ½” drill bit into our drill and drill though the door where we have it marked out.
Once you have the hole drilled though the door we can now install the peephole. If your door is exposed to the elements it might be a good idea to place a small amount of caulk around the hole on the outside of the door. Once we have a small bead of caulk around the hole we can now install the side of the peephole meant for the outside of the door by sliding it into the door with the outside in the door we can now slide in the inside of the peephole into the door and then we will take the install tool or a large flat screw driver and turn it clockwise and tighten the two haves together.
Once you have it in and tight that’s it you have just installed a peephole / door viewer in your exterior door.
