We are going to be showing you this 2009 Subaru Forester on the driver’s door as that is the interior door handle that is broken.
This will be the same steps for other Subaru’s as well. This will also work if you need to replace the passenger side door handle or master window switch or courtesy light bulb.
So we will start by opening the driver’s door. The first tools we will need are a small flat screw driver and a phillips screw drivers.
Well use the small flat screw driver to remove the cover inside the door handle and the grab hold of the door panel.
With the covers popped open we can use the phillips screwdriver and remove the screws. One inside the door handle and one inside the door pull.
Next we can use the small flat screw driver and on the front side of the master window switches is a small hold where we can stick it in and pop loose the switches. Be careful pulling up on it as it can break.
Once we have the master window switch removed we can now use the flat screwdriver to depress the clip on the wiring to undo it. Well undo the two electrical connections for the master window switch.
With the master window switch removed we can grab the phillips screwdriver and remove the two screws that were under the master window switch.
With the switches removed we can go up top on the door behind the mirror and remove the cover or tweeter from the door. To do this well pull straight out on it to pop the clip loose.
Once we have the tweeter removed we can grab the lower part of the door panel/ card and pull outwards on it to pop loose all the push clips. You can use a plastic pry tool if you have one to get it loose enough to get your fingers in it.
With all the push clips popped loose we can lift upwards on the door panel to unhook it from the top by the window.
Next we can grab and unclip/ undo the door handle cables. Lastly to remove the door card we will need to unplug the ground courtesy light wiring.
With the courtesy light unplugged we can now completely remove the door panel. Well set it in the truck and swap out the door handle.
To remove the old door handle we will remove the two phillips head screws that hold it in position. With them removed we can lift up on the door handle and unclip the top.
Next we can open the new door handle and latch the top clips into the door panel aligning the lower part with the pins and screw holes.
With the new door handle in the door panel we can reinstall the two phillips screws that hold it in the door panel.
Now we are ready to reinstall the door panel back into the car.
Well hold the door panel up next to the door and reattach the wiring for the ground courtesy light.
With the light connected we can slide in and down the two door cables into the lock and door handle. Making sure they are clicked into the door panel.
With the light and cables connected we can rehang the door panel onto the door frame by the window.
Once hanging on the door frame we can gently push in on the lower half of the door panel pushing in all those push clips.
With all of the push clips clipped in we can now reinstall the two phillips screws that are behind the master window switches.
With those screws in we can reattach our window switch wiring into the switch. Then we can snap back in the window switch into the door panel.
Once we have the window switch clipped into the door panel we can reinstall the phillips screw inside the door grab hole. With the screw in the can close the cover over it.
Next we can reinstall the phillips screw inside of the new door handle and close the cover.
With that cover closed we can go back up top near the mirror and reinstall the tweeter. Once the tweeter is installed we can pull the film off the new door handle.
With the film pulled from the door handle that’s it we have just shown you how to replace a interior door handle on a Subaru.
