Today we are going to be showing you how to change the oil on a Honda Pioneer 1000. We are going to be showing you on this 2018 Honda Pioneer 1000-5.
The first step is to start the side by side and let the oil heat up and get to operating temperature then we can pull it inside.
We will need a drain pan to catch the waste oil, 10mm socket, 12mm short and deep socket, ratchet, 8” extension and a torque wrench.
Next we can slide underneath the side by side and locate the two 12mm oil drain plugs. The first drain plug is a 17mm for the sub transmission. After that the next drain plug/ cut out you will see the first 12mm oil drain plug then the next one will be the second oil drain plug.
On the newer models they added some labeling near the drain plugs to tell you what you are draining. This is an early model so it doesn’t have the labeling on the skid plate.
To start well move the drain pan under the two drain plugs and start grab the 12mm socket and ratchet and loosen and remove the drain plugs. While the oil is draining we can remove and install the new crush washers onto the drain plug bolts.
Once the oil has stopped draining we can wipe the area clean with a rag and start the drain plugs by hand. Once started by hand we can grab the ratchet and tighten them until the crush washer touches the engine case.
With both drain plugs reinstalled and snugged down we can grab the torque wrench and move the 12mm socket onto it and set the torque wrench to 20lbs and torque them.
Next we can move the drain pan under the oil filter covers. We can grab the 10mm socket and ratchet and loosen the top oil filter cover. There is a spring in there so be careful when removing the cover. With the cover removed we can remove the old filter.
Next we can open the new oil filter. When we install it we want the side with the rubber washer/ o-ring to go in first and the metal side towards the cover. With the filter installed we can grab a pick or small flat screw driver and remove the o-ring from the cover.
Once we have the old o-ring removed we can open the new o-ring, apply some oil to it and install it into the groove on the cover. With the new o-ring installed we can place the spring into the center of the cover and reinstall the cover making sure to align the marks on the cover and the case.
Once we have the cover in place we can start the three 10mm bolts that hold the cover in place.
Next we can repeat the same steps to replace the DTC filter below the one we just replaced. Well replace the DTC filter, install the new o-ring and start the two 10mm bolts by hand.
With both filters replaced we can snug the five 10mm bolts that hold the two covers on. Once they are snugged down we can put the 10mm socket onto the torque wrench. Well set the torque wrench to 9lbs and torque down the five 10mm bolts that hold the covers in place.
They do make a service kit that comes with oil filter, DTC filter O-rings for both covers and new crush washers for the drain bolts.
Next we can lift the lever on the drivers side behind the drivers seat to lift the bed. Once we have the bed lifted up we can look in the center of the rear passengers foot well and you will see a cover.
We need to push the center of the push pins inward then we can remove the five clips to remove the cover to gain access to the oil fill point. Next we can wipe down around the fill cap and remove it.
Once we have remove the cap we can place a small funnel within the oil fill port. Next we’ll start adding oil to the engine. We are going to put in 6 quarts and 16 oz of the seventh quart. Once we have that in the engine we are going to remove the funnel and start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to fill the oil filter housing.
Now that the engine has run for a bit we will let it sit with the engine off to let the engine oil settle before we check the level.
To check the level we will go to the drivers side rear passenger foot well and locate a flap in the corner. When you lift the flap you will see the dipstick used to check the oil level. Well remove it and reinert it to check the level.
As you can see we are a little shy of the full mark. So we can now remove the oil fill cap and reinert the funnel and add a few more oz of oil and recheck the level. Well repeat this process until the oil level reaches the full mark on the dip stick.
Once we have the proper amount of oil in the engine we can remove the funnel and reinstall the dip stick and oil fill cap. With the caps reinstalled we can now reinstall the plastic cover with the push pins.
With the plastic cover reinstalled in the rear passenger foot well we can lower the bed down. The next step is going to be to reset the service light/ wrench icon.
To do this we need to depress and hold the odometer button, then turn the key to the ON position. You will see the wrench icon flash. Keep holding the button until the wrench icon stops flashing. Once that stops flashing you have reset the service interval. You can now let go of the button and turn the ignition switch off.
Lastly you will want to start it again and check around the drain plugs, filter housing making sure that we have no leaks. Once you have confirmed that you don’t have any leaks, that’s it we have just shown you how to change the oil on a Honda Pioneer 1000.
