Today we are going to be showing you how to change the sub-transmission oil on a Honda Pioneer 1000. We are going to be showing you on this 2018 Honda Pioneer 1000-5

You are going to need 2 quarts of engine oil as the sub transmission uses engine oil. We are using this amsoil 10w-40. You can use the Honda GN4 10W-40 engine oil.

You will need a 17mm socket and ratchet. We have also got a new crush washer to replace it as it’s recommended to replace with every oil change/ service.

We can locate the sub transmission drain plug. It’s located in the center of the Honda pioneer even with the front doors. The drain hole in the skid plate will be an oblong hole.

Next we can place our drain pan under the plug. With the pan in place we can grab the 17mm socket and ratchet and loosen the drain plug for the sub transmission.

Once we have the plug loosened we can use our hand to fully loosen and remove the drain plug.

While it drains we take the drain plug and remove the old crush washer and then wipe the drain plug off. With the drain plug wiped clean we can slide on our new crush washer

Once the sub transmission has fully drained we can start the drain plug by hand. With it hand tight we can grab the ratchet and socket and snug it down.

Next we can grab a torque wrench and set it to 22 ft lbs and torque the drain plug. With the drain plug reinstalled and torqued down we can now go back up top and remove the drivers bench seat.

To remove the driver’s bench seat there is a hand latch in the center. We’ll squeeze it to release the seat. Once it releases we can lift upward of the front of the seat and then slide it towards the front of the side by side.

With the seat removed we can set it on the front floor board or remove it from the side by side.

Next on this one we just need to like the rubber cover and heat shield material to gain access to the sub transmission fill point. On some Honda pioneer’s there will be a plastic cover and clips you will need to remove to gain access to the sub transmission fill point.

Well grab a rag or paper towel and wipe off the cap and around the cap/ dipstick. Once its wiped off we can remove the cap/ dipstick.

With the dipstick removed we can grab a small funnel and place it inside the fill port. Well add one full quart and let it settle in. After a few minutes well take the dip stick and check the level.

On this one it’s about halfway on the dipstick to being at the full level so well add a few more ounces and recheck until it’s full.

The sub transmission you take around 1.2 quarts of oil.

With the correct amount of oil back inside the sub transmission we can reinsert the dipstick and reinstall the front seat.

You will want to make sure the back clips on the seat go into the holes and that the front pins go into the bottom of the seat and you should hear the center latch click when it locks into place.

With the seat reinstalled that’s it we have just shown you how to change the sub-transmission oil on a Honda Pioneer 1000.
