Today we are going to be showing you how to change the differential oil on a Honda Pioneer 1000. We are going to be showing you on this 2018 Honda Pioneer 1000-5.
To start we are going to need a drain bucket, you may want a mat to place inside as it helps with splashing on these plastic drain pans. You will also need a torque wrench, flashlight, 17mm, 10mm sockets, 8” long ⅜ extension, ⅜ ratchet. The last thing we need is our 80W-90 oil.
The drain plug for the front differential is right next to where the front drivers side axle goes into the differential.
To start we are going to place our drain pan under the fill plug. We want to make sure we can loosen the fill plug before we drain the differential. Next we can grab the 17mm socket, extension and the ratchet and loosen the fill plug.
Once we have the fill plug loosened with the ratchet we can remove it the rest of the way by hand. Once we have the fill plug removed we can now move onto removing the drain plug.
If you follow the front skid plate down under the side by side you will see a small round hold and it should have the 10mm drain plug bolt in it. We can move the drain pan under this hole.
Next we can swap to the 10mm socket and loosen the drain plug. Once loosened with the ratchet we can remove the bolt the rest of the way by hand. You may want to put some rubber gloves on as gear oil has a smell to it.
Once the front differential has fully drained we can reinstall the 10mm drain plug with the crush washer. You can use the crush washers 3 – 4 before they need to be replaced. With it started by hand we can grab the ratchet and the 10mm socket and lightly snug it down.
With the drain bolt snugged down we can now grab the torque wrench and set it to 9 ft lbs and torque the 10mm drain plug.
Now that we have the drain plug installed and torqued we can grab our gear oil and slowly start to fill the front differential. Gear oil is thick and moves slowly so if you were to try and fill the front differential fast its just going to come back out the fill hole. You need to give the gear oil time to go past the gears and down into the housing of the differential.
We are using Amsoil 80W-90 Atv/Utv transmission/ gear oil. You can stick with the OEM Honda Hypoid gear oil. This Amsoil came in a soft bag which works ok. They do make a hand pump with a hose that attaches to the gear oil bottle and you can pump the fluid in.
Once we have the gear oil just slowly coming out over the threads of the fill cap that means the front differential is full. It should take around 11.5 Fl oz.
With the proper amount of oil in the front differential we can start to apply some new gear oil onto the o-ring on the fill cap and start the fill cap by hand. Once started by hand we can snug the cap down.
With the cap snugged down we can grab our torque wrench and torque it down to 9 ft lbs just like the drain plug bolt.
With the front differential fill plug torqued down we can now proceed to do the same steps on the rear differential.
If we follow the passenger side rear axle into the differential we can locate the rear differential fill cap. We can now grab the 17mm socket, extension and ratchet and loosen the cap. Once loose we can remove it the rest of the way by hand.
Next we can look just behind the trailer hitch mount and find the rear skid plate. On this skid plate will be a small hole like the front where we can locate the 10mm drain bolt.
We can move our drain pan under the bolt and then use the 10mm, ratchet and remove it to start draining the rear differential. Once the rear differential has fully drained we can reinstall the crush washer and the 10mm drain bolt.
With the drain bolt started by hand we can use the ratchet and snug it down. Once its snugged down we can switch over to the torque wrench.
Well torque it down to 9 ft lbs like the rest of the fill and drain plugs. Once torqued down we can start to refill the rear differential.
WIth the gear oil just starting to come over the threads of the fill plug we have enough gear oil in the rear differential and we can apply some oil to the o-ring on the fill cap.
Next we can start the fill cap by hand. Grab the 17mm socket, ratchet and snug the cap down.
WIll the cap snugged down we can swap the ratchet for the torque wrench and torque the fill cap down to 9 ft lbs.
With the rear cap torqued down that’s it we have just shown you how to change the differential oil on a Honda Pioneer 1000.
