Today we are going to be showing you how to replace a Subaru gas cap tether. We will be showing you on this 2006 Subaru outback. It will be very similar for other years and models of Subaru’s.

You have a few options when it goes to replacing the tether. You can get an OEM cap, tether and clip as a kit. There are aftermarket caps, tethers and clip kits.

You can also get just the tether if your gas cap and clip are in good shape. You can get just the clip if that is what has broken on yours.

With 3D printers coming down in price and more and more people being able to afford them. You can also find prints that solve this problem. You have a print to print the tether. Someone has also come up with a print to be able to make a holder for the gas cap that fits onto the fuel door.

For this car the gas cap isn’t causing a check engine light and our fuel door clip is in good condition so we are going to just replace just the tether. We have decided to use a 3D printed one. You can print your own or find them on eBay or Etsy.

To start well remove the clip holding the tether to the fuel door. For this style clip we’ll need a phillips head screwdriver to remove the center pin. Some clips just push in and have two tabs on the back side that hold it in place.

To remove that style you will need some needle nose plies to reach in there and depress those tabs to remove that clip. You can also cut it if you have bought a new one or your kit included one.

Once we have used the screwdriver and removed the center part of the clip we can grab the lower part of the clip and pull it out of the fuel door

With the lower part of the clip removed we can get the old and broken tether off of the clip by compressing the tabs on the back side of the clip.

Next we can loosen and remove the gas cap. Once we have the gas cap removed we can either stretch the old tether off of the gas cap. It’s going to be garbage anyway, so we are going to cut the old and broken tether off of the gas cap.

Now that we have removed the old tether from the gas cap we can grab our new tether and stretch it onto the gas cap making sure that it goes into the groove of the gas cap.

With the tether attached to the gas cap we can reinstall the gas cap onto the filler neck of the car. Once we have the gas cap on the filler neck we can take the other end of the tether and slide/ clip it into the holder on the fuel door.

Once we have the tether going though the clip/ holder on the fuel door we can grab the lower part of our clip and slide it though the tether and then into the fuel door hole.

With the lower part of the clip holding the tether to the fuel door we can grab the center pin and twist it in by hand a few turns.

Next we can grab the screw driver and snug it up. With the clip fully installed holding the tether to the fuel door that’s it we have just shown you how to replace a Subaru gas cap tether.
