We are going to be showing you on this 2016 Arctic Cat DVX 90. This will also work on other Arctic Cat models, the Kawasaki KFX90, Kymco Mongoose 90, and a few others as well.
To start well go on the drivers side of the quad near the footwell. We’ll need a screw gun or phillips screw driver, a 10mm socket and ratchet or 10mm wrench. Next we can remove the nine phillips screws that hold the foot well plastic to the white plastic.
With those nine phillips head screws removed we can and a short extension to our ratchet and remove the four 10mm bolts in the bottom of the footwell. With those bolts removed we can now remove the entire foot well plastic.
Once we have the plastic foot well removed we can now grab a pair of needle nose pliers or channel lock pliers. You will need to squeeze the hose clamp together and slide it up the vent pipe. With that hose clamped moved out of the way we can slide the vent pipe off the clutch cover.
With the vent hose removed we can now grab a 8mm socket, extensions and ratchet and remove the eight 8mm bolts that hold the clutch cover on. Once you have the eight 8mm bolts removed we can wiggle and pull the clutch cover off if it is hard you can give it a few taps with a rubber mallet.
You will notice that one bolt is shorter in length so that bolt will need to go back into the same location in the cover. The other 7 will all be the same length.
Once you have the clutch cover removed we can grab an electric impact or air operated impact as it will make it easier then using a ratchet. We’ll need to loosen the 17mm bolt that holds the primary clutch together.
Well use the impact and a 17mm socket and remove the nut. Next we can remove the kick starter washer/ collar. With that removed we can grab and remove the pulley half of the primary clutch.
With half of the primary clutch removed we can now see the speed collar we need to remove off of the shaft.
To remove it well, you need to pull the belt towards the front pulley/ shaft so that there is some slack in the belt. Once you have some slack in the belt we can now grab and remove the speed collar.
Once you have the speed collar removed it’s a good idea to place it in a zip lock bag and label it and place it with the manual for the ATV. That way when you sell it you or the new owner can reinstall it until they are confident on the ATV and then they can remove it.
Also its a good idea to inspect the belt as if you needed to change it, it would be easy.
Next we can start to reinstall everything. Well start with the half of the clutch half. You will want to make sure it goes on all the way and locks into the spines on the shaft.
With the clutch half installed we can grab the kick starter shim/ washer and slide it onto the shaft. You will want to make sure that the spines align with the shaft as you slide it on.
Next while we hold pressure on the clutch half and the kick starter washer we can start the nut by hand and get it hand tight to hold everything in place and on the shaft.
With the nut hand tight we can grab the impact and 17mm socket and tighten it down while holding the clutch pulley from spinning.
Now that we have the 17mm nut tightened we can grab the clutch cover and align it to reinstall it. Once we have the cover back on we can start all the screws by hand.
Remember the short screw goes up on top, then the rest are all the same length so it doesn’t matter. Once we have them all started by hand we can grab the ratchet and 8mm socket and tighten them down.
With the cover reinstalled and the bolts tight we can now slide on the hose onto the case for the vent. Once we have the pipe for the vent connected we can use pliers to squeeze and reattach the hose clamp.
Once we have the vent tube on and the hose clamp in position we can test the kick starter to ensure that it works. We’ll also take the ATV for a quick test drive to ensure that everything works as it should and that the ATV has the added speed.
Once you have tested it and everything seems good we can now reinstall the foot well plastic. We’ll get it all aligned and start all of the phillips head screws and nuts by hand.
Then well add some anti-seize to the four 10mm bolts that go in the foot well area as they tend to rust and corrode as they are exposed to water and mud.
Once we have all the bolts started by hand we can grab the 10mm socket and ratchet and tighten the four foot well bolts first.
When the foot well plastic is reinstalled that’s it we have just shown you how to remove a speed collar on a Artic Cat 90cc ATV.
