Today we are going to be showing you how to change the oil and filter on a John Deere 1025R lawn tractor

The very first step will be to remove the mowing deck if your tractor has one on it. Next you will want to start and let the tractor run to get the engine oil warm/ up to operating temperature.

With the oil up to temperature we can park the tractor on a flat/ level surface so when we are refilling the tractor with oil we can get an accurate reading.

Once we have the tractor parked on a level surface we can open the hood. With the hood open we can locate the oil fill cap and loosen it a few turns to allow air in and the oil to drain faster.

Next we can grab our oil drain bucket, 17mm socket, short extension, ratchet and then slide underneath the tractor to start draining the oil.

Well start by placing the oil drain bucket under the engine oil drain plug. It is located just behind the front axle. With the drain bucket in place we can use the 17mm socket, extension, ratchet and loosen and remove the drain plug.

While the oil is draining from the oil pan we can slide the oil drain bucket to underneath the oil filter which is located on the passenger side. You should see it within the fender cut out next to the fuel filter.

With the drain bucket in place we can turn the oil filter and remove it. Well let the drain pan and oil filter drain down until they stop dripping.

When they are done draining we can start by grabbing a rag and wiping down where we removed the drain plug. We’ll also wipe down the drain plug itself. You may want to replace the crush washer depending on how many times it was used to ensure that you don’t over tighten the drain plug.

With the drain pan and plug wiped clean we can start the drain plug by hand. Once hand tight we can grab the 17mm socket, extension and ratchet and snug it up. Next we can grab a torque wrench and set it to 15-21lbs.

Now the owners manual doesn’t give you a torque spec. A good amount of people have had luck with tightening/ torqueing it down to 15- 21lbs.

Here is a picture from the owners manual about oil changes.

Once we have the drain plug tightened we can now open our new oil filter. It’s a good idea to take a paint marker or sharpie and write the date and hours on the machine on the new oil filter so you will know when the oil was last changed.

Next we can take some oil on our finger and apply it to the new oil filter rubber washer before we start threading it on.

For the oil filter we will tighten it just till the rubber gasket makes contact with the engine block then give it ½ to ¾ more of a turn.

With the new oil filter installed we can now move onto refilling the tractor with oil. We are filling the tractor with John Deere Plus 50- ll 15w-40 engine oil

We’ll remove the oil fill cap all the way and insert our funnel. With the funnel in the oil fill hole we can add about 2 ¾ quarts.

After we added 2 ¾ quarts of oil we can remove the funnel and reinstall the oil fill cap. Then we can start the tractor and let it run for a few minutes to get the oil to fill the new oil filter.

Once it has run for a few minutes well, shut it off and let it sit for a few minutes to let the oil settle. Next we can remove the dip stick and check the oil level.

This one is a little bit low so we will add some more oil and recheck it on the dipstick.

With the proper amount of oil in the engine we can look around at the drain plug, oil filter to ensure that there are no leaks.

With no leaks that’s it we have just shown you how to change the oil and filter on a John Deere 1025R lawn tractor
