Today we are going to be showing you how to replace the serpentine belt on a 5.9 cummins. We will be showing you on this 1998.5 Dodge ram 3500

This will be the same for the 2004.5 and newer 5.9 Cummins trucks. The only difference is you will need a 13mm wrench to remove the two nuts on the passenger side of the fan shroud. To give you more room to remove the belt.

To start you will want to take note of the belt orientation. There should be a sticker on the radiator that gives you the belt orientation. You can also take a few pictures with your phone to ensure you get it back on the correct way.

It’s also a good time to start the truck and look at the belt tensioner to see if it wiggles around or makes noise. If so its a good time to replace it while you have the belt off.

Once we have a few pictures we can grab a ⅜ swivel head, long handled ratchet. Well take the end of the ratchet and place the end directly into the tensioner. There is a ⅜ square hole right under the bolt that holds it to the block.

With the ratchet in the hole we can move the handle towards the passenger side of the truck bring the tensioner towards the crank.

Once we have the tension off the belt we can grab the belt by the alternator and pull it off the alternator pulley.

With the belt removed off the alternator pulley we can slowly release the ratchet/ tension. Next we need to remove the belt from the rest of the pulleys.

Lastly we need to get the belt over the fan blade so we can completely remove the belt. Well just push the belt into the fan shroud and over each fan blade until it’s removed.

Now that we have the old belt removed we can unpackage the new belt. Well start by getting the new belt over all the fan blades.

With the belt over all the fan blades we can start getting the belt on the rest of the pulleys in the correct orientation. Be sure to check your picture or sticker on the radiator support to ensure the routing is correct.

You will want to ensure that the belt is on each pulley with all the grooves and aligned. I find it easier to put the belt on the tensioner and lastly onto the alternator

Once we have the belt on all the pulleys we can grab the ⅜ ratchet and a bar or extender and apply tension to the tensioner and get the belt onto the alternator pulley.

With the belt fully on you will want to ensure that the belt is fully on each pulley, clutch fan, alternator, water pump and harmonic balancer pulley. The grooves should all be within the grooves on the pulleys and aligned.

Once we have confirmed we have the correct routing and the belt is on each pulley we can start the truck to ensure everything works like it should.

With the belt functioning as it should without any noises that’s it we have just shown you how to replace the serpentine belt on a 5.9 cummins
