Today we will be showing you how to replace a shift lever on a 2008 F-450. We are replacing this shift lever as the tow haul button is no longer functioning. This will work for Ford F-250 – F-450 For sure and I also believe the F-550. This will be the exact same for years 2008-2010. It will be very similar for the 2011-2017 trucks as well. It will just be a different part # because the shifter lever has the gear selection switch on them. For That the Part # will be a BC3Z7210BA. For The 2008-2010 The part # will be 8C3Z-7210-AA.
So we’ll go ahead and open the box and remove the new shifter lever and set it aside. To start the removal of the old shift lever we are going to raise the steering column to the highest point as there are three screws we need to remove on the bottom of the steering column cover. Once we have it raised up we grab a 7/32 socket, a small extension and ratchet. We’ll use that to remove the three 7/32 screws in the bottom on the cover.
With the screws removed we can now separate the two halves of the column cover. It helps to start where the blinker stalk is for one side and the shift lever on the other. Once we have the halves apart we can put the steering column into the lowest position and wiggle and remove the top cover. Now that we have the top half removed we can grab and pull outward on the lower side to get it over the ignition switch.
With the covers out of the way we can now proceed with removing the shift lever. Well start on the bottom of the shift lever there is just a push pin/ clip. Well undo this by hand by grabbing it pulling towards the center of the truck and towards the steering wheel. With the clip removed we can move onto removing the two 7/32 screws. There is one right next to the hazard button and one on the front center. To get the front center screw out its easier to start the truck and turn the wheel so that the flat part of the steering wheel is in line with the screw making it much easier to remove it.
Well start by grabbing the 7/32 socket and removing the top screw. Next we can add a ¼ swivel to the 7/32 socket and remove the front center screw. With the screws removed we can now undo the electrical connection for our tow haul mode. To undo the connection well grab a flat screwdriver and push down on the white clip that holds the wiring to the steering column. Once we have the connection removed off the steering column we can depress the clip and separate the wiring.
Now with the wiring removed there is one more screw we need to remove, its a T-30 Torx bit that holds the shift lever into the shift linkage. Well put a T30 Torx bit into our drill and remove the screw. With the T30 removed we can grab the shift and pull it towards the passenger side of the truck to fully remove it.
Next we can grab the new shifter and slide the shifter into the shifter assembly, align it and then start the T30 screw by hand and then tighten it with our drill. With the T30 tight we can align the bottom clip and clip it into position. For the next step we can reinstall the front center 7/32 screw and then the top 7/32 screw. Once we have both screws started we can grab the socket and tighten them down.
With the screws tight we can now proceed with reconnecting the electrical for the tow haul button. The new switch comes with a new clip to hold the wiring to the steering column. We can either grab a flat screwdriver or cutters and remove the old clip from the steering column or we can use a screwdriver and depress and remove the new clip from the wiring connection. That is what we are going to do as the clip in the steering column isn’t broken.
Once we have the new clip removed we can push the electrical connection back together making sure we hear a click and they are locked together. With the electrical connection together and can push it back onto the clip on the steering wheel.
Now with the screws tight and the electrical connection back together we can pull outward and upward on the lower steering column cover to get it over the ignition switch and back into position. Once we have the lower cover back in position we can tilt the column to the lowest setting and reinstall the top cover. Once in and aligned we can snap them together.
With the two covers snapped together we can tilt the wheel to the upward most position and reinstall the three 7/32 screws into the lower cover holding them together. Once we have the three screws in a tight we can now start the truck and test the tow haul button. As you can see we now have a working tow haul button again.
So that’s it we have just shown you how to replace a shift lever on a 2008-2010 Ford F-250-F450
