Today we will be showing you how to fix a leaky moen faucet by replacing the cartridge on the single lever facet. This will stop it from dripping and will also make the handle move easier.
To start go into the vanity and locate the shut off valves and close them both hot and cold. Once the supply valves are both shut off we can grab a utility knife and use it to pop off the cap on the handle. With the cap of the handle we can now grab a flat screw driver and loosen the screw in the handle.
With that screw removed we can now slide the handle up and remove it. Next we can take the flat screw driver and use it to remove the chrome cover just under the handle. Once we have the chrome trim removed we can use the flat screw driver to push the C clip out. Once we have the C clip/ retainer clip pushed out we can grab it and slide it out using a pair of needle nose pliers.
With that C clip removed we can now remove the chrome cover over the cartridge. Next we can grab the new moen cartridge and open it and remove the white tool from inside. This tool is used to remove the old cartridge from the facet. Place the white tool inside the old cartridge and use a pair of channellock lock pliers and turn the white tool which will turn the cartridge and break it free.
Next take the pliers and grab the brass part of the cartridge and pull straight out to remove it from the facet. Once we have the old cartridge removed we can take 1/2 copper brush and push it in and out a few times to clean the inside of the facet where the cartridge goes. Then take your finger and wipe it out. Once its wiped out we can use the plumber’s silicone/ grease that came with the new cartridge and put it on the rubber parts of the new cartridge.
Once the new cartridge is lubricated we can slide it into the faucet by hand making sure that the holes are on the left and right and the tabs are at the top and bottom. Then place the white tool onto the new cartridge and use the pliers to push on the white tool to seat the new cartridge. Once we have the cartridge pushed all the way in we can now reinstall the chrome cover making sure that the slots are on top and bottom that way we can reinstall the C clip.
Once we have the chrome cover on we can grab the C clip and install it into the slots on the chrome cover. Once we have it pushed in by hand use the pliers to push it in the rest of the way. Once the C clip/ retainer clip is reinstalled we can reinstall the chrome ring/ cover.
Now that we have the chrome ring/ cover reinstalled we now can reinstall the handle. Slide it into position then start the screw that holds the handle in place by hand. With the screw started we can grab a screw driver and tighten it down. With that screw reinstalled and tightened down we can now snap the cover back on for the handle to cover the screw.
Now that we have the cover reinstalled we can turn both the hot and cold supply valves back on. Next we can turn the facet to the left to ensure we get hot water and then to the right to ensure we have cold water. Once we have ensured that both the hot and cold are working we can shut it off and see if we still have a drip. With no drip that’s it we have just showed you how to fix a leaky moen single lever facet by replacing the cartridge.
